Book review The power of spirit - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog
Book review The power of spirit - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Harrison Owen is the inventor of Open Space Technology, the most exciting and productive way of meeting with other people that I know of. In The power of spirit, how organizations transfrom he describes what an organization might look like, if it lived by the open space principles. And let me say this right away: If theyre hiring, I want to work there! The book describes several different stages of organizational development. The most prevalent today is the Proactive organization, which is based on the classical command-and-control structure. The heroes in proactive organizations are the accountants who ensure that everything happens by the numbers. An organization that embraces open space might become what he terms Interactive. Here everybody is a hero, every single person is allowed to contribute according to the persons wishes and the organizations needs. Each organization contains a number of givens. The givens are the absolutely essential tasks like making sure employees are paid, that taxes are paid etc. The organization should ask what is the minimal level of formal structure required to take care of the identified givens, and should maintain the smallest possible structure to handle these. Everything else will be planned, defined and executed through a continual open space process. And why would we want to create these Interactive organizations? To make room for Spirit in the workplace, says Harrison Owen. He purposely does not define what this Spirit is. He argues, that you can either see the whole book as a definition, and that anyway, an exact definition is probably both imossible and superfluous. Although we may not be able to define Spirit, each of us knows when its present and when its not. Proactive organizations, with their tight command-and-control structures, leave very little room for the spirit. Harrison Owen argues that we are already moving from Proactive to Interactive. That we are currently sitting on the fence between these two models and thats never a comfortable place to be. The book covers a lot of territory besides this. Theres a section on Griefwork, the phases that are our human hardwired response to changes in our environment, no matter how big or small. Theres also a chapter on Myths in organizations which is synonymous with storytelling, one of todays buzzwords. I highly recommend this book. I plucked it of my to-read shelf 2 days ago, and devoured it in almost no time its that exciting. Its also beautifully written, and well structured. And you know what: Ive tried it and it works! Enterprise Systems (the company I started with 2 other guys), embodied many of the practices and principles of the Interactive organization. The result: 5 years of having fun, growing as people, growing as an organization and making money. Thanks for visiting my blog. Reasons to create an ASCII (text only) version of your resume
Reasons to create an ASCII (text only) version of your resume An ASCII résumé is a plain text presentation of your document. It does not include graphics, rule lines, or bullets and its far less sexy than your Word document, but many recruiters and hiring managers prefer plain text documents. Imagine that you are a recruiter who has posted an open position on a big job board. You may receive several hundred resumes for that open job. The time spent opening all those Word documents could be overwhelming. Its much more efficient to review multiple resumes when they are posted within the body of the email than it is to view as an attachment. In addition, the risk of opening an attachment that contains a virus is eliminated when the text only version is copied and pasted into the body of the email. Even if the employer requests that the resume be sent as an attachment, it is still recommended that you include a copy and paste version so the reader can quickly preview your qualifications before opening up the attachment.

Narcissist Bosses Expert Advice on How to Handle Them
Narcissist Bosses Expert Advice on How to Handle Them Your bossâs three favorite words are âme,â âmyselfâ and âI,â and theyâve never really gotten that âThereâs no I in teamâ thing, because itâs all about them, all the time. The world is unfortunately full of narcissistic bosses whose self-aggrandizing and resistance to criticism has propelled them to leadership positions. (Of course, there are just as many, if not more, whose career ambitions are sacrificed on the altar of their ego.) Working for a narcissist can be draining, demoralizing and destructive to your well-being and career, but if updating your resume and finding a new job is impossible, experts say there are some tactics for managing a narcissistic manager until you can leave. Know what youâre dealing with. âOne thing thatâs under-appreciated is that there are generally two types of narcissist, the grandiose narcissist and the vulnerable narcissist,â says Seth Spain, assistant professor of organizational studies and leadership at Binghamton University. Of the two, the grandiose narcissist is the more benign one. âThey take criticism alright because they donât believe it,â Spain says. On the other hand, the vulnerable narcissist is prone to paranoia and acutely defensive against anything they perceive as a slight, no matter how mild or unintentional. âTheir ego inflation is a defense against not really believing in themselves,â Spain says, so theyâll defend that over-inflated sense of self at all costs. Practice avoidance. If your boss is a vulnerable narcissist, your best bet is to keep a wide berth, Spain says. âYou want to avoid even the appearance of criticism if youâre stuck working for this person,â he says. âYou want to have as little face-to-face contact as you can possibly manage⦠The more you interact with them, the more likely it is youâre going to unintentionally slight them in some way,â he says. Be a good professional ally. Things are more likely to go smoothly if the narcissist sees you as someone whoâs on their side. âYou want your boss to see you as an asset to further his or her status in the organization,â says W. Keith Campbell, professor and head of the Department of Psychology at the University of Georgia. Itâs useful for you if they see you as useful for propping up their ego, particularly in front of others. âUse flattery and try not to outshine him or her,â he says. Know their weak spots. See what trips them up and anticipate where their behavior might cause problems for them. âNarcissists are especially prone to errors of overconfidence,â Lee Macenczak, assistant professor of management at Kennesaw State University, wrote in a recent study in Personality and Individual Differences. âA narcissistic boss who radiates feelings of superiority, entitlement and a constant desire for admiration may also be more likely to make risky decisions,â a recent Association for Psychological Science article points out. If your big-headed boss makes big promises that could swamp them, you can better position yourself to avoid the fallout. Manage their unrealistic expectations. If the narcissistâs ego is at stake, even facts can go on the back burner. âYou do sort of have to actively fight misinformation on the part of the narcissist,â Spain warns. âTheyâre always going to be taking credit or making grand claims people canât back up,â and depending on your role in the organization, this can put you in a bad spot. âIf the boss is trying to set expectations that are completely unreasonable, you have to try and push back against that,â he says. Use specifics to fight back. If your boss screams at you within earshot of the entire department, it might be tempting (and satisfying) to call them out as a the egomaniac they are, but Spain says a more successful way of trying to thwart such behavior is to focus on concrete details. âMake it about the problematic behavior, try to focus on the current situation [and] keep your criticism as specific as possible,â he says. You also could frame it as an appeal to their all-encompassing ego, saying that while you were hurt by their outburst, for instance, youâre also concerned that this behavior could damage their reputation as a great leader. (Whether or not they actually have such a reputation is unimportant here.) âIf you can couch a criticism in a flattery it can work well,â Spain says. Have an outlet to vent. This is important; narcissistic bosses are notoriously exhausting to work for, and you might need that network if they fire you in an egomaniacal fit. âBuild a broad and supportive social network within and outside the organization in case you are let go by the boss, or want to leave because you just canât take it anymore,â Campbell says. Realize that it is about them, in a way. âNarcissism is partially about dominance. They make themselves feel big by making other people feel small,â Spain says. In other words, belittling you at a meeting or sending a scathing email is more about feeding their ego than providing feedback. âKnowing it really has nothing to do with you can help your self esteem,â he says.

Pregnancy Is Actually Contagious, According to Study - Fairygodboss
Pregnancy Is Actually Contagious, According to Study - Fairygodboss After you, your friends and your colleagues reach a certain age threshold (which will vary depending on location, lifestyle, and other related factors), youll likely notice an interesting phenomenon everyone suddenly seems to get pregnant at the same time.Whether its a deluge of baby shower invites from within your social circle or numerous simultaneous maternity-leave requests from your coworkers, these signifiers reflect an intriguing scientific principle, recently proven by the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (ADD Health). Youre not imagining things. To a certain extent, pregnancy actually is contagious.Scientists performed a survey of 1720 women from the mid 1990s to the late 2000s, honing in on pairs of high school friends who remained close into adulthood. By analyzing data, the researchers discovered a direct (yet unsustained) contagion link between these women and their respective planned pre gnancies. We found this effect to be short-term and inverse U-shaped an individuals risk of childbearing starts increasing after a friends childbearing, reaches a peak around two years later, then decrease, explained the research team. ADD Health coined a phrase to explain this effect the fertility influence. The researchers attribute the fertility influence to three factors social learning (the idea that women will feel a stronger draw to motherhood once they see a friend handling it well), social influence (women may get a sense of FOMO from their reproducing pals), and cost-sharing (if a friend has a baby shortly before you, youll be able to benefit from her help with childcare, supply-borrowing and activity-planning).Researchers spotted a direct correlation between the closeness of a friendship and its likelihood of affecting pregnancy decisions, indicating that while you may become subconsciously influenced by your work wifes choice to get preggers, random Karen in Accountings h appy announcement wont do much to sway you. Also, the test revealed that the contagion spread by the fertility influence doesnt impact sibling relationships. However, researchers found an explanation for this gap, suggesting that in todays individualized societies, chosen friends may be equally or more important than siblings and other family members. In conclusion, your everyone is having a baby right now feeling isnt based on paranoia there actually is a form of contagion at play here.
